The near-miss mechanic rewards players who swim dangerously close to obstacles without touching them. Each near-miss adds bonus points and builds your combo multiplier faster. The key is maintaining a steady rhythm โ don't panic when hooks appear close. Instead, glide smoothly past them with minimal movement.
Advanced players can chain 5+ near-misses in a row for massive score boosts. The hitbox for near-miss detection is approximately 8 pixels wider than the actual collision box, so you have a small window to trigger it without getting hit.
Practice in Pond mode first where obstacles move slower, then gradually increase difficulty as your muscle memory develops.

Not all power-ups are created equal. Their value changes dramatically based on difficulty level and current game state:
Pro tip: If you have a shield active and see another shield power-up, let it pass. The shield doesn't stack, so you'd waste it.

Ocean difficulty is where legends are made. The speed increases by 40%, obstacles appear in tighter clusters, and coral reefs create narrow passages. Here are the top strategies from our best players:

The combo system is the key to high scores. Here's how the multipliers work:
One hit resets everything to zero. This creates a risk/reward dynamic: do you grab that pearl near a hook cluster, or play it safe and maintain your combo?
The mathematical optimal strategy is to prioritize combo maintenance over individual collectibles once you reach 10x. A single pearl at 3x (150 pts) is worth more than three bubbles at 1x (30 pts).

Your fish character has three visual states that provide gameplay feedback:
These visual cues are designed to be peripheral โ you can read your fish's state without looking directly at it, keeping your focus on the obstacles ahead.

This week's community challenge: reach 300m in River mode without using any power-ups. The trick is pure positioning โ stay slightly above center where hooks tend to cluster less.
Use small, precise movements rather than large sweeps. Several players have already posted 280m+ runs. Can you break the 300m barrier? Share your results!
Next week's challenge preview: "Pearl Collector" โ collect 20 pearls in a single Ocean mode run.
